Hydrologist
Volue is a market leader in technologies and services that power the energy value chain. Around 800 employees work with more than 1100 customers in the energy sector.
Our mission is to provide innovative services critical to society, unlocking a cleaner, better and more profitable future. Working towards this goal, Volue has become a leading technology supplier and enabler of the green transition, helping energy companies simplify and optimize everyday operations.
We are now looking for a Hydrologist who can help us to continuously improve Volue’s ability to provide value to customers in line with the Volue mission. This entails building, improving and operationalising hydrological forecast models that are critical for energy producers, traders and system operators across Europe. In order to achieve this, you will be working together with hydrologists, data scientists, software developers and product managers within the Fundamentals team in our Data & Forecast business.
What you will be doing to make a difference:
Contribute to building and improving hydrological forecast models (inflow, snow, runoff and water balance) across short, medium and long horizons
Apply a mix of process-based hydrology and machine learning/statistical methods to improve forecast accuracy and robustness
Work with diverse data sources, including observations, reanalyses, NWP outputs, satellite products and customer data
Support the development of end-to-end pipelines for model training and operational forecasting in collaboration with data engineers and developers
Evaluate forecast performance and continuously identify areas for improvement
Visualise data and forecasts to generate insights for both internal teams and customers
Support customer discussions when needed and help explain forecast behaviour
Stay up to date on developments in operational hydrology and applied machine learning, bringing new ideas into the product
What you need to succeed:
MSc or PhD in hydrology, water resources, environmental physics, geosciences, meteorology or a related quantitative field (or equivalent practical experience)
Experience working with hydrological or environmental data (e.g. precipitation, snow, inflow time series)
Programming skills in Python (or similar), with an interest in writing clean and maintainable code
Familiarity with machine learning approaches for environmental or time-series data
Strong communication skills in English, both written and spoken
Nice to have:
Experience with cloud platforms or modern data/ML tooling
Background from hydrological agencies, energy utilities, research institutes, or environmental consultancies
No prior energy market experience required. Genuine curiosity about how the water cycle connects to the energy system is what matters.
Reasons to join Volue team and what we offer:
Meaningful work with direct real-world impact, contributing to the green transition across Europe
Opportunity to work at the intersection of physics-based hydrology and machine learning
Collaboration with a highly skilled, interdisciplinary team
Large degree of influence in shaping & developing the role further
Great colleagues in one of Europe’s most exciting green tech companies with innovative and international work environment
Flexible working hours & competitive compensation package
The position reports to the Team Lead of the Fundamentals team within Data & Forecast and cooperates closely with cross-functional teams across the organisation. We are looking to hire for Volue offices in Oslo, Trondheim, Arendal, Gdańsk or Vienna, but will be ready to consider other locations for the right candidate.
In Volue, we cherish each employee’s competence, ideas and personality. Let your skills and talent be a part of our team – and let us leave our mark on the world together!
